9:00 PM: Pittsburgh Steelers LB LaMarr Woodley posted an e-card on his Facebook account with the message: "Dear football season, Thank you for saving my Facebook news feed from everyone's political views. It was getting old."

8:45 PM: West Salem High School in Oregon is playing football this season on a home field with black turf, and the school managed to save $137,000 on installation fees with the color choice.

8:30 PM: The Milwaukee Brewers unveiled a new statue of longtime announcer Bob Uecker during a ceremony at Miller Park Friday.

8:15 PM: With about an hour left before the signing deadline, Tottenham Hotspur managed to sign former Fulham player Clint Dempsey.

8:00 PM: Florida State football coach Jimbo Fisher says Saturday's season opener against FCS member Murray State will present a "good test" for the 7th-ranked Seminoles. Next week FSU faces another FCS school in Savannah State.

6:30 PM: The Oakland Skyline (CA) High School football team had to forfeit Friday's scheduled game & may have to forfeit the season due to a lack of eligible players. Coach Jamaal Kizziee said new academic requirements has left him with only 13 eligible players.

6:15 PM: Penn State plans to hold a moment of silence before Saturday's football game against Ohio for victims of child sex abuse, but does not plan to make any mention of Joe Paterno.

6:00 PM: New York Jets coach Rex Ryan says about his 2012 squad: "Overall in my opinion this has the chance to be the best team I've had since I've been the coach here"

5:45 PM: Video of the Arkansas Travelers' grounds crew trying to lay down a tarp at Dickey-Stephens Park while battling winds from Hurricane Isaac.

5:30 PM: Someone put up a makeshift memorial of Joe Paterno outside of Beaver Stadium Friday evening near the spot where Paterno's statue previously stood. The site has a lifesize cut-out of the coach with the sign: "JoePa Made Penn State A Better Place".
