A British couple explained how they build one of the most fascinating homes in Britain in just three years. Robert Hardy a Civil Engineer from Devon and his wife Ann converted a former underground reservoir into one of the most fascinating homes in Devon. When the couple bought the reservoir from South West Water, they decided to build their dream home inside the reservoir.
Mr. Hardy, 49, said that he was attracted by the difficulty of the project. ?I have been building homes on fields and it not that fun? he said. Once the couple saw the sight, they unanimously decided to sell their previous home and move closer to the construction site.
?We are not investors and profit was not a motivator, we just thought that it made financial sense? Mrs. Hardy, 51, said. Just when the couple was ready to embark on building their dream home, they were dealt a blow by the infamous 2008 financial crisis. The banks were very cautious when lending money and as a result, the couple had to haggle in order to borrow the ?800,000 required to complete the job.
Building the home also posed challenges because they were building it inside a former underground reservoir. The building process started in March 2008. Since the ground below was not firm enough to support the weight of diggers, Mr. Hardy requested the workers to remove the turf by hand.
Once the turf had been removed, the welders had to get into the concrete drum and erect the steel girders. However, the welders could only be inside the drum for a maximum of three hours. Despite all the hurdles, the couple remained undeterred.
Once the drum was opened up, the aluminum and glass walls were installed as well as the drainage system to divert the water from the courtyard. After three years of hard work, an artificial turf was laid on the roof of the house.
Sadly, Mr. Hardy sustained a head injury while at work. He fell off a ladder and was admitted to hospital with subdural haematoma (blood clot between his brain and skull). Doctors at the hospital told him to reduce his workload for three years. As a result, the decided to put the property on sale and live off its proceeds until he recuperates fully.
