India PM vows to press ahead with economic reforms

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh vowed on Saturday to press ahead with reforms to further liberalise the country's still inward-looking economy, undeterred by strong political opposition.

"Reforms are not a one-off process," says PM Manmohan Singh.

Singh's government announced in September a sudden blitz of reforms designed to open the retail, aviation and broadcasting sectors to more foreign investment and revive an economy in which growth stalled at around three-year lows.

"We will do what is good for the country... reforms are not a one-off process," Singh told reporters in New Delhi.

The reforms have prompted a coalition ally to pull out of the Congress-led government and a string of protests nationwide.

But they have been warmly greeted by business and investors, with the Indian currency hitting a five-month high of 52.49 rupees against the dollar Friday as more foreign investment has poured in.

Singh, who was speaking on the sidelines of the swearing-in of India's new chief justice, Altamas Kabir, did not outline what new steps he plans, but analysts expect him also to liberalise the insurance and other sectors.

The premier had no comment on a report by a government panel late Friday that warned India faced a "fiscal precipice" and called on New Delhi to phase out fuel, food and fertiliser subsidies to rein in a ballooning deficit.

"We cannot overemphasise the need and urgency of fiscal consolidation," the panel said, warning corrective moves were an "imperative necessity" as India's "external payment situation is flashing red lights".

Singh's left-leaning government is deeply wary of cutting subsidies, especially on food, in the still heavily poor country of 1.2 billion people, fearing a voter backlash in general elections due in 2014.

The panel headed by former Indian finance secretary Vijay Kelkar also called for stepping up sales of stakes in state-owned firmed and revamping India's archaic, patchwork tax system that drives up company costs.

India could find itself in a worse financial state than during 1991 balance-of-payments crisis when the country teetered on the edge of bankruptcy and was forced to seek a bailout by the International Monetary Fund.

The Resident Evil Franchise (2002-2012) | DarkMedia.com

by Julianne Snow:

Installments:

Resident Evil (2002)

Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)

Resident Evil: Extinction (2007)

Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)

Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)

Review:

As a franchise, Resident Evil stands out as one of the best out there. Part of the reason for that is the consistency in the writing. Each of the films was written by Paul W.S. Anderson and you can tell where he has envisioned the series to be headed from the first movie. His grasp on the Umbrella Corporation and the characters of the video games is second to none.

Back in the late 1990s, I had heard that George A. Romero had been asked to write the script for the adaptation of the game to the screen. That script, however, was scraped mainly due in part to its similarities with the progression of the video game. I can?t help but wonder what Romero?s version would have looked like?

With Anderson?s versions, you don?t need to be a gamer to enjoy them. Players of the game and moviegoers alike can certainly appreciate the films for what they are. The characters in the franchise have not all remained constant, but you develop an understanding of the role that each of them played within the scope of the entire plot. Milla Jovovich is flawless as Alice and honestly, I cannot think of a better actor to play the part. The additions of Michelle Rodriguez as Rain Ocampo, Sienna Guillory as Jill Valentine, Mike Epps as LJ, and Ali Larter as Claire Redfield are only a small example of the talent you?ll find within.

The aspect of the movie that deals with the T-Virus, zombies, monsters, and the like is superb. The action is non-stop and each time you think you?re just going to get just another zombie movie, Anderson introduced something new to be scared of.

As a whole, the franchise sets the bar high. Is it going to win an Academy Award? Probably not, as critics tend to pick those pieces that appeal to a wider subset of the population. Will fans appreciate the action, humour, and characterization developed along the way? Absolutely. If you haven?t seen any of the films, why the heck not? They do appeal to more than the zombie lovers out there!

Auto Loans With Poor Credit ? What Most ... - Free Finance Articles

While some people may be able to get by without a vehicle, the truth is that most people can?t. To put it in simple terms; if you need an auto then you need a car. Maybe you live somewhere that doesn?t have any public transport, and you certainly can?t be a hermit. You have a job to go to and not having an automobile isn?t an option. But you?ve got an extra concern because your credit isn?t all that great. If so , then you are not alone, however you really can get auto loans with poor credit.

One of the most important factors in what kind of loan it?s easy to get is your credit score. The better your score the better your loan should be. It requires a while for any changes you make to be reflected in your credit report, so you need to start making changes right away. Additionally , if there is any way you can delay buying a auto, it?ll give you more time to get your credit into better shape.

When you have poor credit you pay out more for a loan than someone who has sound credit. Where someone with sound credit may just be able to get an auto loan for 5%, someone with bad credit can expect to pay anywhere from 12% to 25% for a similar loan. Let?s use a $10,000 loan with 60 regular payments to find out how the rates compare. At 5% you?ll pay a grand total of $11,320, but at 12% and 25% that turns into $13,345 and $17,610 respectively. That is the reason why it is so vital to do what you can to boost your credit.

Always recall that it is your money, and that implies it?s your responsibility to manage it sensibly. Hunting around for the best possible loan, regardless of how bad your credit is, is the clever move to do. As you?ve already seen, one or two % points could save you thousands of bucks. Your goal is to get as good of a rate as your are able to. Even though it took you one or two hours to track down the most competitive rate, it might be more than worthwhile.

It should come as no surprise the economy isn?t precisely at its strongest right at this time. The good news is that banks and automobile dealers are mindful of this and are working diligently to help people get auto loans with poor credit. In the past lenders might have laughed you out the door if you had damaged credit, but today they will practically bend right over to work something out for you. if the 1st lender you go to turns you down, then go to another one?and then another?and then another if you have to.

Having damaged credit isn?t any fun, but it does not need to stop you from getting an auto loan. Just make sure that you compare them carefully and read all the fine print. That way you will be able to get an automobile you want at the best possible price.

Joe Wilson has worked in the loan industry for over two decades. Let him share with you his years of experience with payday loans, auto loans, student loans and the new peer to peer loans.

Bulgarian Recruitment & Selection Companies Offer Virtual HR Teams

Written by: Jaiyant Cavale on September 26, 2012.

I am sometimes surprised by the lack of knowledge that people display, when it comes to countries located in Eastern Europe. Not many know that Bulgarian recruitment and selection companies offer virtual HR teams for foreign businesses. Things have changed and they are no more part of the Eastern-bloc. Bulgaria is one such country and is located in South-eastern Europe and has a population of 7.36 million who predominantly live in urban areas that border five countries ? Romania, Turkey, Greece, Macedonia and Serbia. In 1991 the country adopted a democratic constitution.

Since then, the country has seen many changes and looking for employees has become much easier in this tiny Eastern European country. A detailed listing of recruiters can be obtained through the directory of employment and recruitment agencies or one can browse the recruiting directory of a particular geographical area and contact each member for information given on their profile pages.

Bulgarian recruitment agencies are allowed to operate in the Bulgarian and International market at the same time. These professional recruitment agencies are officially authorized by the Bulgarian Ministry of Labor and Social Policy. Since 1990s, Bulgarian businesses have been successfully growing especially in recruiting services and human resource management. Mostly, these agencies provide free of charge assistance as they are benefited financially from the clients of their business.

Those who seek jobs in Bulgaria are aided by the agencies that offer application packages for governmental organizations and institutions. The agencies offer free consultations which include many tips regarding searching for a certain firm?s profile, preparation of a CV, related documents to be attested along with the covering letter, suggestions to prepare for an interview and presenting themselves in a presentable way. Bulgarian recruitment agencies offer assistance for foreign citizens issuing work permits.

Recruitment agencies are great options for small businesses with less finances to develop their own human resources department. Bulgarian recruitment agencies have begun to double up as virtual HR teams for several clients. Bulgarian recruitment and selection companies provide administrative staff, commercial agents and executive managers to foreign companies that are interested in setting up an office in Bulgaria.?? Bulgarian companies are strictly committed to the policies of modern HR management.

How is a Kindle like a cuttlefish? Parallels between e-Paper technology and biological organisms that change color

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? Over millions of years, biological organisms -- from the chameleon and cuttlefish to the octopus and squid -- have developed color-changing abilities for adaptive concealment (e.g., camouflage) and communication signaling (e.g., warning or mating cues).

Over the past two decades, humans have begun to develop sophisticated e-Paper technology in electronic devices that reflect and draw upon the ambient light around you to create multiple colors, contrast and diffusion to communicate text and images.

And given the more than 100 million years head start that evolution has provided to these animals and their cellular systems, it's not surprising that e-Paper devices lag behind in optical performance, especially color generation.

In an effort to close that gap, a multidisciplinary team led by University of Cincinnati researchers came out Sept. 26 with a paper that aims to help biologists who work with these color-changing creatures and engineers who work with e-Paper technology.

Authors are Eric Kreit, a recent doctoral graduate in UC's College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS); Lydia M. M?thger and Roger T. Hanlon, research scientists at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass.; Patrick B. Dennis and Rajesh R. Naik, scientists at the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright Patterson Air Force Base; Eric Forsythe, scientist at the Army Research Laboratory; and Jason Heikenfeld, associate professor of electronic and computing systems, also in the University of Cincinnati's College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS).

According to UC's Kreit, "Our main goals were threefold: To allow display engineers to learn from millions of years of natural selection and evolution. To teach biologists the most advanced mechanisms and performance measurements used in human-made reflective e-Paper and to give all scientists a clearer picture of the long-term prospects for capabilities such as adaptive concealment and what can be learned from now you see me, now you don't mechanisms."

Ways in Which Animals and Electronics Are Alike

One of the researchers' key findings is that there are numerous approaches to change the reflective color of a surface and that the highest-performance approaches developed by both humans and nature share some powerful common features. Both use pigment, and both change or achieve color expression by either spreading or compacting that pigment. Animals use muscle fiber to spread or compact pigment, and electronics make use of an electric field to do so.

However, even if the basic approach for color change is similar, humanity has never developed anything as complex or sophisticated as the biology and physics of cephalopod skin. (Cephalopods are a diverse ocean group and include 700 species of cuttlefish, squid and octopus -- and are the acknowledged masters of color change on the planet).

According to Heikenfeld, "The highest performance human-made approaches have been only recently developed, well after numerous other approaches were tried. Perhaps in the past, if we had more closely trusted nature's ability to find the best solution, we would be further along today in creating better display technology."

Animals Are Efficient Users of Available Light

Biological organisms that change color are very efficient at using available light. The animal's skin either reflects light to achieve a bright-color effect or absorbs light to achieve stunning, multi-colored effects.

In their use of available light, the biological organisms are more efficient than electronic devices, which generally require large amounts of electric power to generate an internal/emissive light to generate bright color.

Said Roger Hanlon, "Cephalopod skin is exquisitely beautiful and radiant, and can be changed in milliseconds, all without generating any intrinsic light from within the skin; there are elegant solutions from biology waiting to be translated to our consumer and industrial world."

In fact, overall, animals "outscore" synthetic devices when it comes to sophistication and integrated systems; required energy use for color change; size scalability (cephalopods' adaptive coloration works over a wide range of sizes in the organisms' class -- from small-size cuttlefish to large-size octopus and squid); and surface texture (cephalopods can selectively adapt or "crinkle" their skins to match a variety of three-dimensional textures, which provides additional light scattering and shadowing).

Electronic Devices Achieve Colors Faster and Achieve More Colors

Human-developed technology is far superior to cephalopods or other color-adapting animals when it comes to speed. In other words, human-made electronics can achieve color and a color change faster than the response time of a biological organism.

In addition, synthetic devices can provide a greater range of colors and more efficient dark or black state. In other words, a device can achieve a black screen, but most biological organisms cannot achieve such darkened coloring. This is, in part, due to the fact that an organism like a marine animal generally has no reason, in terms of survival adaptation or signaling, to go to a dark or black state. Such an adaptation would actually make them more visible, not less, to predators.

This research was funded by the Air Force Research Laboratory, National Science Foundation, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Army Research Laboratory, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Office of Naval Research.

Hamas halves Israeli fruit imports to Gaza

GAZA (Reuters) - The Hamas government has barred much of Gaza's fruit imports from Israel, citing a need to cultivate local Palestinian agriculture and for "resistance" against the Jewish state.

The ban is opposed by Gazan produce traders who fear a squeeze on supplies and price hikes in the poor coastal enclave, which has a largely black market economy and lacks viable trade with Egypt, its other neighbor. Local growers however said the move would help them.

With the exception of bananas and apples, Gaza is no longer admitting fruit from Israel, the Agriculture Ministry said on Monday. The ban affects at least seven kinds of fruit and, in terms of sales, constitutes around a 50 percent cut in imports whose 2011 value the ministry put at $26 million.

Tahseen Al-Saqqa, the ministry's director of marketing, said the move was in part a response to what he described as Israel's refusal to allow the export, through its border with Gaza, of staple Palestinian fruit like grapes and guavas.

"The Palestinian farmer is suffering because all doors to export have been closed," Saqqa said.

The charge was denied by Israel, which limits traffic in and out of Gaza and whose dealings with Palestinians there are often circuitous given long-running hostilities with Islamist Hamas.

"I know of no request to export agriculture products from Gaza that has been refused," said Guy Inbar, spokesman for the division in Israel's Defence Ministry which liaises with the Palestinian territories.

PRICE OF WAR

Gaza fruit importer Jaber Al-Shanty said the Hamas government ban was "irresponsible and unrealistic" as it overlooked the losses to hundreds of Palestinians whose livelihood depends on marketing the fruit.

"The local product is not nearly enough" to offset the shortfall, he said. "What do we have in large quantities, other than guava?"

Shanty said he and other importers had made advance payments to Israeli suppliers that would now be difficult to claim back.

Hikmat Abu Al-Qombuz, another importer, predicted spiralling fruit prices - which Gaza, most of whose 1.6 million Palestinians depend on aid, can ill afford.

Gaza dates and guava grower Ibrahim Al-Shaer, 52, said the move would help farmers by raising prices. But he admitted some imports from Israel remained vital.

"Israeli fruits compete with our produce in the market and they push down the prices. The government should allow imports at a reasonable level so the prices of our fruits do not go down sharply," Shaer said as he stood in his field in Mawasi in southern Gaza.

Since the import ban went into effect on Friday, the price of peaches has doubled to eight Israeli shekels ($2) a kilo, while dates were selling at 11 shekels ($2.81) a kilo, up from 7 shekels.

Saqqa said the Hamas government would crack down on any Gazans deemed to be gouging fruit prices, and urged Palestinians to view the hardship through the prism of their struggle against Israel.

"We are people under blockade and we should have the culture of resistance," he said. "Why should someone have all kinds of fruits on his table?"

Hamas won a Palestinian ballot in 2006, and had an uneasy alliance with the Western-backed rival Palestinian faction Fatah until they fought a brief civil war in Gaza a year later.

Under Hamas rule since, Gaza has suffered an often grinding embargo by Israel and Egypt, alleviated by goods smuggled in through tunnels from the Egyptian Sinai.

Israel, which fought a three-week war with Gaza in 2008-2009, eased overland travel restrictions in mid-2010. Hamas has urged Egypt to open up its border with Gaza since Islamists swept to power in Cairo this year but the call has not been met.

The Decline of Desktops Due to Mobile Computing | TechWench.com

posted September 25, 2012 /

Desktop computers may still be around, but for how much longer? Mobile computing sales have been growing steadily causing desktop sales to stall out ...

Desktop computers may still be around, but for how much longer? Mobile computing sales have been growing steadily causing desktop sales to stall out over the years. People are finding that they can do just about the same thing from their laptops, tablets, or even smartphones that they could do with their desktops. Are these mobile devices the end of the desktops?

In today?s society, people are always on the move and they want technology that can move with them. With portable devices people are able to access things like social media, bank accounts, and games no matter where they are. This is one of the biggest reasons why people seem to be buying laptops, net books, and tablets instead of a desktop with a tower. Desktops are difficult to move, whether it?s from one desk in the house to another, or if you are going on a trip that requires you to have a computer. People opt for smaller, more portable options when it comes to technology; they like to have the option of taking it with them where ever they go. Being wireless is a big perk for people on the go; desktops have lots of wire connections for speakers, a keyboard, a mouse, and many other things. People now prefer to have less clutter. This makes a laptop vary appealing since it has not only the hard drive, but also the screen, keyboard and mouse, and sound system.

Technology has changed a lot letting laptops become even more powerful than they once were. This is another reason why more people want laptops rather than desktop computers. It used to be that your desktop had more RAM, storage, and speed, and your laptop would never be able to stack up. Many notebooks and net books now, however, come with dual or even quad core processors, which give them the same computing power as a desktop. This means that not only is a laptop light weight and portable, but it has almost the same power as most desktops on the market now days.

Laptops aren?t the only things stunting the sales of desktops; smartphones have also had a big impact. For a long time, the closest thing to having a computer in our pocket was a palm pilot or PDA, but those never matched up to your home desktop. However, Apple had different plans for the mobile computing market. When Apple came out with the first generation iPhone in 2007, stores couldn?t keep them in stock for more than a couple hours, which has never happened with computer sales before. The first generation iPhone?s biggest feature was being able to use WiFi to surf the web and for apps. This had a lot of people excited that they could have internet access in more places than just at home, without having to carry around bulky machinery. When the iPhone was released, it set the stage for more advanced mobile technology and computing.

Tablets also have also changed how many desktops are being sold. iPads or Android tablets may not be considered as a replacement of a laptop or computer, but they do act like a bridge between smartphones and personal computers. However, there are many tablets that are almost equivalent to that of a laptop or net book. Tablets that run Windows 7 or are compatible with Microsoft are user friendly and act like a tablet computer. People like these types of tablets because they let them have access to important documents that run off of Microsoft, while having the same layout and function as a laptop or even a desktop. Tablets have become a very viable option in the computing industry.

Tablets, smartphones, and laptops now have access to cloud storage. This makes it easier for people to use their smartphones and tablets for their computing and storage needs, which means there is less of a need for a home base desktop. Use of cloud storage and applications like DropBox has let tablets and smartphones act in the same way that laptops and desktops do. It lets users view and edit documents, as well as sync calendars and pictures with their laptops or desktops. This lets people stay mobile but still stay in touch with all of their documents wirelessly. Mobile devices also have a more personal feel than desktops do since they are able to use GPS and accelerometers to help give the user up-to-date information about their current surroundings. Smartphone and tablet companies have been working to make these devices even more personal than they are now. Google has been working on Project Glass to create the ultimate personal experience while using a mobile device. Project Glass is a pair of glasses with a small screen that lets you see current weather updates, travel times, maps, and a variety of other things that are completely personalized to you. This mobile device isn?t concept technology; Google is almost ready to start Beta testing of this product. People like to have technology that seems to be designed for just for them.

In the current market, PC sales have stayed stable, but haven?t showed any sign of moving up. In the latter part of 2010, desktop computer sales were around 80 million, but a year later, sales had dropped by 5 million. While 75 million desktop sales may seem like a lot, it is still a sign that desktops sales are declining. This drop in sales could be related to the economy, but it could also be from people choosing a different option for their computer needs. Laptops that match the power and storage of a desktop may have a cheaper retail price, which makes it more affordable. Many people also find that it is cheaper and less time consuming to simply buy a new laptop rather than to replace or upgrade their desktop. It is expected that by the year 2015, desktop sales will make up only about 18% of computer sales.

Whether or not this is an immediate sign that desktop computers are slowly becoming obsolete doesn?t change the fact that technology is always bringing us something new to hopefully better our lives. There are plenty of new inventions that, one day, will change the way we use technology and possibly get rid of current technology. Google has already shown their new device that could make even some of the newer smartphones we have on the market history. There is no telling what type of technology the future may hold and when some products will become obsolete. Corning Inc. has already shown us they plans they have for the future that relies entirely on interactive glass. In their vision of the future, there are no desktops or even laptops.

(AP) ? As condolences poured in from around the world, National Zoo officials waited Monday for word on why a 6-day-old panda cub died and lamented a heartbreaking setback to their closely watched breeding program.

The cub had liver abnormalities and fluid in its abdomen, but a cause of death will not be known until full necropsy results are available within two weeks.

The cub, believed to be female, died Sunday morning, less than a week after its birth surprised and delighted zoo officials and visitors. Zookeepers had all but given up on the panda mother's chances of conceiving after six years of failed attempts.

"Every loss is hard," National Zoo director Dennis Kelly said. "This one is especially devastating."

This much is known: The cub appeared to be in good condition. It had been drinking its mother's milk. And it wasn't accidentally crushed to death by its mother, which has happened to other panda cubs in captivity. At birth, the cubs are hairless, their eyes are closed and they're about the size of a stick of butter. Their mothers weigh about 1,000 times more.

Native to China, giant pandas have long been the face of the movement to preserve endangered species. A few thousand are believed to remain in the wild, and there are a few hundred in captivity.

Four American zoos have pandas, and several cubs have been born in the U.S., but the bears at the National Zoo are treated like royalty. The zoo was given its first set of pandas in 1972 as a gift from China to commemorate President Richard Nixon's historic visit to the country.

Thousands of people had watched an online video feed of the cub's mother, 14-year-old Mei Xiang, hoping to catch a glimpse of the newborn during its few days of life. Fans from around the country and the world shared their sympathy on social media sites, and many said they shared an emotional connection with the burly, black-and-white bear.

Since the cub's death, Mei Xiang has started eating and interacting with her keepers again. She slept Sunday night while cradling a plastic toy in an apparent show of maternal instinct, Kelly said.

Kelly Parsons of Alexandria, Va., who brought her two young sons to see the pandas Monday, said she felt for Mei Xiang.

"It sounds like the mom is in mourning. Whether you're a parent to an animal or a human being, it's just so sad, the loss of a child," she said.

Suzan Murray, the zoo's chief veterinarian, cautioned that while it may appear the panda is grieving as she cradles the toy, Mei Xiang is a wild animal and her thoughts and emotions are not well understood.

Mei Xiang's only cub, a male named Tai Shan, was born in 2005 and became the zoo's star attraction before he was returned to China in 2010. Since his birth, there had been five unsuccessful attempts to impregnate Mei Xiang, and zoo officials had considered swapping her and her male partner, Tian Tian, for another pair.

Zoo officials said they're focused on Mei Xiang's health but didn't rule out trying to breed her again. At 14, she may have a few more years of fertility remaining. The oldest panda known to have given birth in captivity was 19; pandas can live to their mid-30s.

The mortality rate for panda cubs in the wild is unknown, but in captivity, 26 percent of males and 20 percent of females die in their first year. The zoo's first panda couple, Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing, had five cubs during the 1980s, but none lived more than a few days.

The new cub's liver, about the size of a kidney bean, was harder than usual and discolored, Murray said. The fluid in the cub's abdomen was unusual and could have been a symptom of the liver problem, she said.

There was no evidence of fluid in the cub's lungs, which would suggest pneumonia.

Because Mei Xiang's other cub survived and she appeared to be taking good care of the newborn, zoo officials had been cautiously optimistic. Kelly said he was not aware of anything that could have been done to improve the cub's chances of survival.

The staff was taking the death especially hard because of the work they'd put in over the past six years to produce another cub, Kelly said. But even those who only watched Mei Xiang online were heartbroken.

"So sad watching her!" one Facebook commenter wrote. "She seems quite distressed and seems like she keeps looking for her baby. Can't figure out why they don't bring him/her back."

Dynamo Health 101: Blood Cancer Awareness Month?.. | Dynamo ...

I was recently watching Good Morning America regarding Robin Robert?s fight against Myelodysplastic Syndrome and was inspired to write a post on blood cancer. Her resilience is infectious and I encourage everyone to support her fight. Team Robin!!!!!

Despite advances in technology, radiation and chemotherapeutic agents; the incidence of cancer steadily increases which theoretically may be a reflection of better detection. Never the less, many people still wonder when the road to a cure will be discovered. ?Cancer awareness is a public health initiative to provide information on cancer related facts in an effort to educate the public, support ongoing research and empower current cancer survivors and caretakers. With September being Blood Cancer Awareness Month, this article strives to answer the following questions:

  • What is blood cancer?
  • What is the epidemiology of blood cancer?
  • What are the risk factors and clinical signs and symptoms?
  • What is the role of radiation, chemotherapeutic agents and stem cell transplantation?
  • How can we make a difference?

What is blood cancer?

Blood cancer is a form of cancer that attacks the production and function of your blood cells, bone marrow and lymphatic system; a system that aids the immune system in eradicating waste products, bacteria, toxins and cancer cells. Blood cancers are comprised of the following: leukemia, lymphoma (Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin), myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes. These diseases typically arise from acquisition of a single abnormal cell that multiplies and interferes with the production of functional blood and immune cells.

What is the epidemiology of blood cancer?

In the United States, one person is diagnosed with blood cancer approximately every 4 minutes. If you extrapolate that data out for a total of 7 days, that is approximately 2,520 people; the equivalent to the entire undergraduate population of Smith College having this diagnosis. The incidence rate is lower than that of diabetes (one person every 30 seconds), but higher than HIV (one person every 9.5 minutes). According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated combined total of 1,638,910 people in the US are expected to be diagnosed with leukemia (47,150), lymphoma (79,190) or myeloma (21,700) in 2012. Based on these statistics, my guess is that everyone might agree that this is quite alarming.

Blood cancers represent the most common types of cancer in children and adolescents. Leukemia represents the highest incidence at 27.5%, followed by Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma at 7.1% and 6.5% respectively. Males seem to be disproportionately more at risk of developing and dying from leukemia than females. Although blood cancers are relatively rare in comparison to other forms of cancer, African Americans are disproportionately at higher risk for more aggressive forms of blood cancers (i.e. multiple myeloma) and typically have poorer survival rates when compared to other racial and ethnic groups.? However, clinical outcomes relative to survival rates have improved over the years and can be best illustrated in figure below.

What are the risk factors and clinical signs and symptoms?

The truth is nobody knows exactly what causes the development of blood cancers, but there are certain risk factors that place you at a higher likelihood of developing them. Blood cancer risk factors include the following: increased age, exposure to chemotherapy and ionizing radiation, smoking and tobacco use, obesity and exposure to chemicals (i.e. benzene).? ?Chemotherapy and ionizing radiation not only destroy abnormal cells but can actually also injure normal host cells. As a result, these nonfunctional injured cells proliferate and become the primary cells in your bone marrow; thus causing blood cancers. Early detection of blood cancers is extremely difficult as the symptoms can mimic less severe conditions like common cold. The clinical signs and symptoms are malaise, swollen lymph nodes, itching, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, fever, bruising easily, fatigue, headaches, frequent infections and generalized weakness. Patients are diagnosed through a series of blood tests and a bone marrow biopsy.

What is the role of radiation, chemotherapeutic agents and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT)?

The goals of treatment are to relieve symptoms, minimize the risk of serious toxicities and ultimately eradicate the abnormal cells and produce new functional cells. Treatment decisions are based on the type of blood cancer, the age of the patient and their general overall well-being. Undergoing chemotherapy and radiation causes a lot of stress on the human body, therefore patients should be in good health otherwise to successful complete it. Chemotherapeutic agents are utilized in order to destroy the abnormal cells; patients typically receive them in different stages (i.e. induction, consolidation and maintenance stages).

Under appropriate conditions, stem cell transplantation may also be useful in treating certain types of blood cancers. Stem cell transplantation is the process of transplanting stem cells derived from bone marrow, peripheral blood or an umbilical cord. An autologous HSCT is when cells are taken out of the patient, harvested and then returned to their body. Allogeneic HSCT is when cells are taken out of a donor (i.e. a relative or non-relative), harvested and then inserted into the patient. The patient must undergo high doses of chemotherapy (with or without radiation) to eradicate the malignant cells from the body prior to HSCT. Patients are at risk of developing a syndrome called graft versus host disease, if the patient?s residual cells attack the new cells.

How can we make a difference?

Many of us may feel that we lack the capacity to make a difference in the fight against cancer. But, I am here to tell you that ?you can? and here?s how:

1. Be a resource of information for your friends and family. ?There are many misconceptions about medical conditions that exist in today?s society leading to the spread of inaccurate information. Knowing the facts are key. For example, some people believe all cancers form tumors. This is false. Leukemia as we read above does not form tumors but arises from abnormal blood cells that affect the functionality of the immune system. A second misconception is ?people should not bank stem cells from placenta or cord blood if blood cancers don?t exist in their family?. ?This is also false. People chose to bank their child(ren)?s stem cells as a safeguard for the future. There is not always a genetic link for the development of cancer. Additionally, stem cells may have a role in other conditions such as Alzheimer?s, diabetes and heart disease. I encourage everyone to visit the following website for more information and to spread the WORD about blood cancers.

2. Seek medical attention and trust your body. For many cancers, there are warning signs that individuals tend to ignore. If something is abnormal for 2 weeks or longer, please seek assistance.

3. Stop smoking. Smoking is a risk factor for nearly all cancers and other medical conditions (i.e. heart disease, diabetes?..shall I continue).

4. Become a bone marrow donor. Due to lack of donors in ethnic communities, treatment modalities are limited; thus making the disease harder to eradicate in our communities. Consider donating today.

5. Donate your time and money to the cause if you can. In these hard economic times, I know everyone is holding on to every piece of pocket change. But if you can donate, please do. There are other ways to contribute monetarily including hosting bake sales, skipping those mid-afternoon coffee breaks. Every cent counts on the road to a cure. It is important to donate to charities recognized by the IRS, if not the money you contribute may go to marketing as opposed to research.? Lastly, participate in blood cancer awareness events in your city.

Lastly, I encourage everyone to get out there and SPREAD AWARENESS!!!! Just like Lottery, you never know!!

Dr. Bias
