Improved Tennis Court Opens at SF Rec and Park's Willie Woo Woo ...

SAN FRANCISCO ? San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (RPD), Supervisor David Chiu, Harper for Kids (HFK), United States Tennis Association (USTA), SF Rec and Park Tennis Camp kids, and park advocates gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony to open the newly resurfaced tennis court at Willie Woo Woo Wong Playground in Chinatown on June 26th, 2012. Children from SF Rec and Park Tennis Camp showcased their tennis skills and practiced tennis drills on the new court.

?The tennis court at Willie Woo Woo Wong Playground is one of the most beloved courts to the many tennis players in this neighborhood,? said Board of Supervisors President David Chiu ?We applaud SF Rec and Park, Harper for Kids, and USTA for their efforts to improve the court to better serve our Chinatown community.?

The aging tennis court in Willie Woo Woo Wong Playground is the only public tennis court in Chinatown. HFK and USTA donated more than $6,000 to resurface the court as an effort to increase the opportunity for children from Chinatown community to learn and play tennis as well as to develop important life skills. In addition, the donation also helped resurface the volley ball court adjacent to the tennis court at the Playground.

?SF Rec and Park is thrilled to offer new summer youth programming on the freshly resurfaced courts at Willie Woo Woo Wong Playground,? said Phil Ginsburg, SF Rec and Park General Manager. ?We look forward to an ongoing partnership with Harper for Kids and USTA to provide San Francisco children the opportunity to learn the lifelong skills of tennis.?

Willie Woo Woo Wong Playground has been identified as one of the City?s playgrounds in urgent need to be renovated because it is dilapidated and failing the SF Parks Alliance?s playground safety report card. Currently, it is on the list for capital improvement for the 2012 Park Bond which is proposed to be on the ballot this November.
