Autopsy reveals 'Buckwild' star died of carbon monoxide poisoning

REUTERS - An autopsy on Shain Gandee, a cast member of MTV reality show "Buckwild," showed he died from carbon monoxide poisoning, Kanawha County Sheriff's Department said on Tuesday.

Deputy Brian Humphreys told Reuters that the deaths of Gandee, 21, his uncle David, 48, and friend Donald Robert Myers, 27, on Monday morning were ruled "accidental" after coroners completed autopsies on all three men.

Gandee was found dead in the driver's seat of his Ford Bronco pick-up truck in Sissonville, in Kanawha County, a rural West Virginia community.

The truck was found by one of Gandee's friends after the MTV star was reported missing by family members following a late-night session in a local bar.

Gandee's truck was partially submerged in a mud pit, and the vehicle's exhaust pipe was below the surface of the mud, the sheriff's department said in a news release.

MTV said in a statement on Monday that it was "shocked and saddened" by Gandee's death. A spokesperson told Reuters that the network had suspended production on "Buckwild."

Gandee was one of the lead cast members of "Buckwild," which follows a group of young adults living in rural West Virginia and has attracted some criticism for its portrayal of the cast's hard-partying ways.

Gandee was often seen on the show "four-wheeling" in his truck, driving through makeshift courses on off-road terrain, and "mudding," where he would drive at high speeds through mud pits.

In an effort to guide you towards savvy purchases, we dug through the dealnews archives from years past to see what goods are, well, good to buy in April, and what you should hold off on purchasing. From early spring apparel sales to aggressive iPad prices, here's what's in store this month for the smart shopper.

Kindle Fire HD at All-Time Low Price Points

Many industry analysts assume that Amazon's Kindle Fire HD tablets are priced near the manufacturing cost, which would mean that Amazon doesn't make much money, if any, from the sales. Likely as a result, we typically haven't seen large or frequent discounts on these tablets. However, last month Amazon announced that it would cut prices on its entire fleet of 8.9" Fire HD Special Offers tablets. Prices now start at $269 for the base 16GB Wifi version, and although we've seen that particular model for less before, in general, each model is now at or near the lowest price we've seen ? making it a good time to give the Fire HD a try.

Skip the Canon T5i and Opt for a T4i Deal

Canon recently announced the newest model in its EOS Rebel line, the T5i, but it appears to offer minimal updates to the previous-generation T4i. The major difference between the two comes down to price: Since the T4i is no longer the latest model, it will see discounts that make it at least $340 less than the T5i. In fact, last month we saw the body and kit lens bundle fall to its best-ever price of $560, and we expect to see that price (or a better one) again in the coming weeks.

Mid-Season Clothing Sales Coming to a Retailer Near You

The general rule to dressing yourself in deals is to wait about two months after a new season of apparel hits stores before cashing in on sizable discounts. Many retailers began debuting their spring merchandise in February, placing April at about the 2-month mark. Look closely at the discounts though: a spring clothing sale that takes 30% to 40% off is likely a mid-season promotion; for discounts of 50% off or more, wait until May.

I Spy iPad Deals

Supposedly Apple will be updating the iPad this month, which means that the fourth generation iDevice that was released in October 2012 will start to see significant price cuts from resellers like MacMall, Fry's Electronics, and Best Buy. Moreover, Apple-refurbished iPad 4s will also drop in price, at which point you'd do well to keep an eye on both the Apple Store and its mysterious eBay site; we've noticed that the eBay store will occasionally offer prices lower than what Apple charges directly, while still being reconditioned by the manufacturer with a full 1-year warranty. However, as far as getting a deal on the brand new model, our data suggests that we won't see a deal on the latest iPad until at least one month after it's released, at which point you could save as much as $59.

Jump Start Your Mother's Day Shopping

If you're thinking about buying some baubles for Mother's Day, then start looking now. We still find and list deals, coupons, and sales for jewelry in May, but often times we see slightly higher final prices on styles right before the holiday. This is especially true of online jewelry retailers.

Get Your Fill of Tax Day Freebies

There are few people in this world who don't appreciate getting something for free, and luckily, one of the most popular days for restaurants to offer something gratis takes place in April: Tax Day. Fast food and nationwide chains in particular will offer some sort of freebie on April 16, and if the offers are anything like last year, then you should be on the lookout for opportunities to get a free cup of coffee, free breakfast foods, or free side orders or desserts with the purchase of an entr?e. We also found Office Depot's promotion last year, in which the store amusingly offered to shred 5 lbs. of documents for free, an enticing option.

Wait Until Black Friday to Upgrade Your Vacuum

Many sources suggest buying a new vacuum cleaner in the spring, and as ideal and motivating as that may sound, according to our archives, there are almost twice as many deals on these handy home appliances in October and November. Moreover, the quality of the deals will be better in the fall as well, as we typically see a higher number of Editors' Choice?discounts in particular. So make do with your cleaner for now and upgrade in a few months time instead.

Put Off a Mattress Purchase Until Memorial Day

May is generally a good time to find a deal on a new mattress, and indeed for the past two years the sales we saw on mattresses received deeper discounts in May over April. Therefore, it's important to keep in mind that any discounts you see this month could very likely get even steeper if you wait until May, specifically around Memorial Day weekend when department stores roll out holiday-related promotions. Not quite ready for a new mattress? Last year we saw excellent discounts on mattresses around Black Friday and Cyber Monday as well, so you'll have another opportunity to cash in on strong deals later in the year.

Deals on Big-Screen HDTVs Near or Below Black Friday Prices

If you're looking to upgrade to a big-screen HDTV, there's never been a better time. 60", 55", and 55" 3D TVs are at or very near all-time lows.

55" 3D LCD HDTVs, for instance, hit all-time lows last month, with prices starting at $747 ? that's $3 under February's best price. Likewise, 55" (non-3D) name-brand LCD HDTVs hit their second-lowest price of the past 12 months and deals started at $688. That's a $51 difference from our all-time low during Black Friday! Lastly, 60" LCD HDTVs bottomed out at $698 in March, which is just $10 shy of the size category's best price set back in Black Friday.

Core i5 Ivy Bridge Laptop Prices Hit Rock Bottom

Sales of new Windows 8 laptops are bad. So bad that Microsoft is offering OEMs discounts of up to 20% on licenses for Windows 8 (and Office). While those discounts are generally for ultraportables, our deal archives show they're also affecting prices of mainstream 15" Ivy Bridge laptops. For instance, just last month we saw a 15.6" Acer Aspire with 6GB of RAM and a 750GB hard drive go for an unprecedented $299. That's the lowest price we've seen for any Ivy Bridge system. It's also $41 under our February mention, which at the time was also an all-time low. While we doubt we'll see such significant price drops in April, we predict this $299 price will become the new norm as it makes its way to touchscreen Windows 8 laptops.

Connecticut Gun Laws: State Reaches Deal On Post-Newtown-Shooting Proposal

HARTFORD, Conn. ? Connecticut lawmakers announced a deal Monday on what they called some of the toughest gun laws in the country that were proposed after the December mass shooting in the state, including a ban on new high-capacity ammunition magazines like the ones used in the massacre that left 20 children and six educators dead.

The proposal includes new registration requirements for existing magazines that carry 10 or more bullets, something of a disappointment for some family members of Newtown victims who wanted an outright ban on the possession of all high-capacity magazines and traveled to the state Capitol on Monday to ask lawmakers for it.

The package also creates what lawmakers said is the nation's first statewide dangerous weapon offender registry, creates a new "ammunition eligibility certificate," imposes immediate universal background checks for all firearms sales, and extends the state's assault weapons ban to 100 new types of firearms and requires that a weapon have only one of several features in order to be banned.

The newly banned weapons could no longer be bought or sold in Connecticut, and those legally owned already would have to be registered with the state, just like the high-capacity magazines.

"No gun owner will lose their gun," said House Minority Leader Lawrence Cafero Jr., a Norwalk Republican. "No gun owner will lose their magazines."

The bill also addresses mental health and school security measures.

The shooting Dec. 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School reignited the gun debate in the country and led to calls for increased gun control legislation on the federal and state levels. While some other states, including neighboring New York, have strengthened their gun laws, momentum has stalled in Congress, whose members were urged by President Barack Obama last week not to forget the shooting and to capitalize on the best chance in years to stem gun violence.

Connecticut should be seen as an example for lawmakers elsewhere, said Senate President Donald E. Williams Jr., a Brooklyn Democrat.

"In Connecticut, we've broken the mold," he said. "Democrats and Republicans were able to come to an agreement on a strong, comprehensive bill. That is a message that should resound in 49 other states and in Washington, D.C. And the message is: We can get it done here and they should get it done in their respective states and nationally in Congress."

The proposal was revealed to rank-and-file lawmakers Monday after weeks of bipartisan, closed-door negotiations among legislative leaders. A vote was expected Wednesday in the General Assembly, where Democrats control both chambers, making passage all but assured. The bill would then be sent to Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, who has helped lead efforts to strengthen the state's gun laws but has not yet signed off on the proposed legislation.

Earlier in the day on Monday, Malloy voiced support for the Newtown families and their desire to ban the possession of large-capacity magazines.

Ron Pinciaro, executive director of Connecticut Against Gun Violence, said his group will live with the lawmakers' decision not to ban them as other states have done. He said the leaders made their decision based on what was politically feasible.

"We have to be satisfied. There are still other things that we want, we'll be back for in later sessions," he said. "But for now, it's a good thing."

Robert Crook, executive director of the Connecticut Coalition of Sportsmen, contended the bill would not have changed what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School, where the gunman fired off 154 shots with a Bushmaster .223-caliber rifle within five minutes. He went through six 30-round magazines, though half were not completely empty, and police said he had three other 30-round magazines in addition to one in the rifle.

"They can register magazines and do all the rest of this stuff. It isn't going to do anything," he said.

Gun owners, who've packed public hearings at the state Capitol in recent months, voicing their opposition to various gun control measures, are concerned they've been showing up "for virtually nothing" after learning about the bill, Crook said.

"Clearly we've made our point," Crook said. "But I don't know what anybody can do at this point in time."

Six relatives of Newtown victims visited the Capitol on Monday, asking lawmakers to ban existing high-capacity magazines. Some handed out cards with photographs of their slain children.

Allowing magazines that carry 10 or more bullets to remain in the hands of gun owners would leave a gaping loophole in the law, said Mark Barden, whose 7-year-old son, Daniel, was killed in the shooting.

"It doesn't prevent someone from going out of the state to purchase them and then bring them back. There's no way to track when they were purchased, so they can say, `I had this before,'" Barden said. "So it's a big loophole."

Barden and other victims' family members who visited the statehouse earlier on Monday did not immediately respond to messages seeking their reactions to the agreement.

Jake McGuigan, a spokesman for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, which is based in Newtown, said he wouldn't comment on the proposal until he saw it in the writing, but he questioned the mechanics of a registry for magazines.

"How will they register a magazine? It seems a little weird," he said.

Why you should still be bullish on stocks | Trading Desk | Investing ...

While many who avoided panic selling during the financial crisis already saw new portfolio highs last year, some on the sidelines are now waiting for a more attractive entry point to jump back in.

The S&P 500 hit a new all time high last week, more than doubling since bottoming in March 2009.

The 9 best-performing stocks since the last S&P 500 all-time high

You often hear about the best-performing stocks since the market hit its post-crash low in March 2009. But what about the stocks that have done the best since the last market top?

But waiting for a pullback ? the index slipped seven points on Monday to 1,562.2 ? and trying to time the market have proven a difficult strategy, leading more often to underinvestment and underperformance in up-markets.

?With widespread expectations for a pullback, and many looking to buy on the dip, any near-term pullback we get could be shallow and short-lived,? Savita Subramanian, an equity strategist with Bank of America Merrill Lynch, told clients.

She said that corrections of 5% or more typically happen about five times a year, with the last one occurring in November 2012.

Any near-term pullback we get could be shallow and short lived

?Fundamentals and valuations remain attractive, and investors continue to be skeptical of the strength and sustainability of this bull market. That is all very bullish for equities, and as the year progresses we expect further evidence that the global recovery remains intact,? she added.

The strategist also pointed out that while the S&P 500 is essentially flat over both the past five and 13 years, the underlying fundamentals have improved.

For example, the index?s leverage ratio has been cut in half since the last peak in 2007. Meanwhile, profits are 13% higher and its dividend yield is 30 basis points higher.

On valuation, Ms. Subramanian estimates the S&P 500 is 10% cheaper in real terms and on a price-to-earnings basis compared to 2007, 17% cheaper on EV/EBITDA and 25% lower on price-to-book value.

?Based on these improvements, we find it somewhat surprising that it has taken this long to make new highs,? she said.

Deutsche Bank equity strategist David Bianco also looked at dips of 5% or more, noting that while they are inevitable, they don?t happen in the absence of bad news or emerging risk.

He pointed out that it?s been 90 trading days since the last 5%+ decline in the S&P 500 and 374 days since a correction. Since 1960, the average number of trading days between 5%+ dips is 118 and 357 for 10%+ corrections.

Of course, pullbacks aren?t clockwork.

?They come on disappointment, which raises uncertainty that requires reassessment at the time,? Mr. Bianco said in a research note.

The strategist is telling clients to resist the urge to sell in anticipation of the S&P 500 hitting new highs this spring. He pointed to the Fed reiterating its commitment to asset purchases until the job market improves considerably, Congress passing a budget resolution that reduces shutdown risk, and an expectation of good first quarter earnings reports.

It also helps that April is the second strongest month of the year, on average, after December. While the index has fallen more than 5% nine times since 1957 in the month, Mr. Bianco noted that most of these declines occurred due to concerns of Fed tightening or high P/E.

?Perhaps it will be time to tactically sell in May, but it looks best to stick around for April,? he said.

As U.S. stocks make new highs and leave other global markets in the dust, the MSCI World Index is still roughly 15% off its peak and the ex-U.S. segment is 25% below it high of five years ago.

?The U.S. is seemingly impervious to all that goes around it,? said David Rosenberg, chief economist and strategist at Gluskin Sheff + Associates.

However, he warned that some signals that stocks are overbought are beginning to take hold. These include the Street?s 2013 targets for the S&P 500 now being raised north of 1,600, 11 straight weeks of positive flows into stock funds, and sentiment polls showing the lowest percentage of bears since May 2011.

?As was the case at the 2001 highs and the 2007 highs, so many folks seem to assess how good things are based on what the stock market is doing. That is not always a good thing to do,? Mr. Rosenberg said.

?Those jumping in now after a five year period in which the major averages have soared 135% and without the major components of the economy having fully recovered could end up being a classic case of bad timing? as if we haven?t seen this before.?

Egyptian TV satirist appears before prosecutors

CAIRO (AP) ? A popular television satirist known as Egypt's Jon Stewart has appeared before prosecutors after an arrest warrant was issued against him for allegedly insulting Islam and the country's leader.

Several dozen supporters gathered outside the public prosecutor's office Sunday as Bassem Youssef, the host of the weekly show "ElBernameg" or "The Program," arrived a day after the warrant was first reported in the media.

Government opponents said the warrant against such a high profile figure, known for lampooning President Mohammed Morsi and the new Islamist political class, was an escalation in a campaign to intimidate critics. It followed warrants for five prominent anti-government activists accused of instigating violence.

Youssef tweeted a series of quips from the prosecutor's office. "They asked me the color of my eyes. Really," one read.
