Hidden lives of elephant seals: Record-setting dive more than a mile deep

ScienceDaily (May 15, 2012) ? Researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who pioneered the use of satellite tags to monitor the migrations of elephant seals have compiled one of the largest datasets available for any marine mammal species, revealing their movements and diving behavior at sea in unprecedented detail.

A new study published May 15 in the journal PLoS ONE focuses on the annual migrations of adult female elephant seals, with data from nearly 300 animals. The results show elephant seals traveling throughout the entire northeast Pacific Ocean on foraging trips in search of prey such as fish and squid.

"This work is unprecedented in terms of the number of animals tracked. For the first time we can truly say that we know what the elephant seal population is doing," said Daniel Costa, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and leader of the elephant seal research group at UC Santa Cruz. "This represents the efforts of a large number of graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and undergraduate volunteers who have all worked very hard to make this happen."

The researchers found that individual seals pursue a variety of different foraging strategies, but most of them target one oceanographic feature in particular--a boundary zone between two large rotating ocean currents, or gyres. Along this boundary, the cold nutrient-rich waters of the sub-polar gyre in the north mix with the warmer waters of the subtropical gyre, driving the growth of phytoplankton and supporting a robust food web. Presumably, this leads to a concentration of prey along the boundary, said Patrick Robinson, a postdoctoral researcher in Costa's lab and lead author of the paper.

"The highest density of seals is right over that area, so something interesting is definitely going on there," Robinson said.

Previous studies by Costa and other participants in the Tagging of Pacific Predators program have shown that this boundary zone is important for a wide range of marine predators, including elephant seals, sharks, tuna, and albatrosses. A surface feature associated with the boundary zone, caused by blooms of phytoplankton, is detectable in satellite images, but it moves seasonally as much as 1,000 kilometers to the south. The deep-diving elephant seals do not follow this surface feature, but continue to target the deep boundary zone between the two gyres.

Smaller numbers of female elephant seals feed in coastal regions, pursuing bottom-dwelling prey along the continental shelf, or in other areas outside of the boundary zone such as around seamounts. Among these is a large female that feeds near Vancouver Island and holds the record for deepest recorded dive by an elephant seal. The data analyzed in the PLoS ONE paper include one dive to 1,747 meters (5,765 feet, well over a mile), and the same seal dove even deeper on a more recent foraging trip, reaching 1,754 meters (5,788 feet), Robinson said.

Female northern elephant seals make two foraging trips every year. After the breeding season in February and March, they head out to sea for two months before returning to the rookery to molt. Then they leave on a long post-molting migration that often lasts eight months, from June to January. The amount of food a female is able to find on these foraging trips directly affects her breeding success and, if she gives birth, her pup's growth rate and chances of survival.

"If foraging is not good, the pups are smaller at weaning because the females produce less milk," Robinson said.

In addition to tracking the foraging migrations, the researchers monitor the health of the seals and track birth rates over time. Tags are attached harmlessly onto the animals' fur and recovered when they return to the rookery. Before and after each migration, the researchers get weights and blood samples from the tagged seals, which always return to the same rookery. The tags used today are far more sophisticated than the first ones deployed by UCSC researchers in the 1980s. Current devices, used on a subset of the seals in this study, can capture an animal's location, swim speed, and depth and duration of dives, as well as the temperature and salinity of the seawater and how that changes with depth.

Most of the animals in this study were tagged at the rookery on A?o Nuevo Island, where UCSC researchers have been studying elephant seals for decades. But the study also involved a collaboration with researchers in Mexico to tag elephant seals at Islas San Benito, which is 1,150 kilometers (690 miles) southeast of A?o Nuevo. "A lot of those animals travel much further to get to foraging areas in the north, so they might spend an extra week traveling, and we wanted to see how that affects them," Robinson said. "The animals from San Benito that do go up to feed at the boundary zone do fine, but we also found that many of them stayed closer to home, feeding along the continental shelf, and they were successful too."

These findings highlight the adaptability of elephant seals, suggesting that they may be able to withstand environmental perturbations such as climate change because the population is not dependent on a single foraging strategy.

This research is also providing valuable oceanographic data. While ocean surface temperatures can be measured by satellites, oceanographers have limited temperature data from deep waters. Costa's group has organized the temperature data collected by the elephant seals into a format that oceanographers can use and uploaded it to the World Ocean Database, providing millions of ocean temperature data points not otherwise available.

In addition to Robinson and Costa, the coauthors of the paper include Daniel Crocker, a longtime collaborator who earned his Ph.D. at UCSC and is now a biology professor at Sonoma State University; Juan Pablo Gallo-Reynoso at Unidad Guaymas in Sonora, Mexico; UCSC graduate students Cory Champagne, Melinda Fowler, Chandra Goetsch, Kimberly Goetz, Jason Hassrick, Luis Huckstadt, Jennifer Maresh, Sarah Peterson, and Nicole Teutschel; UCSC postdoctoral researchers Sara Maxwell, Birgitte McDonald, and Stella Villegas-Amtmann; Carey Kuhn of the National Marine Mammal Laboratory in Seattle; Samantha Simmons from the Marine Mammal Commission; and Ken Yoda of Nagoya University in Japan.

This project was supported by the Office of Naval Research, the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers, gifts from Steve Blank, the Rebecca and Steve Sooy Graduate Fellowship in Marine Mammals, and the Ida Benson Lynn Chair in Ocean Health.

(AP) ? Nebraska Republicans on Tuesday were choosing a candidate to square off against Democrat Bob Kerrey, a former senator seeking another turn on Capitol Hill in one of the year's most hotly contested Senate races.

The GOP primary fight illustrates a years-old split between the two wings of the GOP. State Attorney General Jon Bruning, backed by establishment Republicans, is trying to overcome a spirited challenge from state Sen. Deb Fischer, who has tea party support. State Treasurer Don Stenberg also was on the ballot.

Elsewhere, Oregon was deciding whether to give its 25 presidential delegates to Mitt Romney, the all-but-certain GOP nominee. Nebraska Republicans also were weighing in on the GOP race though no delegates would be allotted in a vote that amounts to a beauty contest. The state's 32 delegates to the Republican National Convention later this year will be determined at the state convention on July 14.

Romney was 171 delegates short of the 1,144 needed for the nomination and is on pace to get them before the month ends. He was spending the day in Iowa, a competitive general election battleground, delivering a speech on the economy as he looks to counter President Barack Obama on voters' top concern.

Idaho voters also were picking nominees for state and congressional offices.

But the biggest race Tuesday was Nebraska's GOP Senate primary.

Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson, a two-term moderate, is retiring and both parties are eyeing his seat. Democrats want to keep it to maintain their Senate majority, while Republicans see an opportunity in their drive to win back control of the Senate.

Democrats control the Senate 51-47, plus two independents who caucus the majority. But the outcome in November of several competitive Senate races could result in a power shift.

Kerrey, who served Nebraska as governor and as a U.S. senator before leaving Congress in 2001 to become a university president in New York, reluctantly agreed to run again to help give Democrats a shot at holding a seat they've long controlled.

Republicans in Washington turned to Bruning, who has been successful in statewide races. But in the final stretch of the Senate campaign, he has found that his nomination is hardly assured.

Fischer, a rancher in rural Nebraska, has mounted a feisty campaign that in the past few weeks has attracted attention and endorsements from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina and other tea party darlings. She's also backed by an outside group, created by TD Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts, that's running TV ads on her behalf.

Stenberg, for his part, has argued that he is the only "genuine, life-long conservative" in the race.

Car Buying Guide - Part 2 - Financing Your New Vehicle Purchase

Lease or Finance? The quick response to the question of whether it?s best to lease or finance a new car is to simply pay cash. It?s the most simplest option, and also happens to be the least expensive one as well. But, like most Canadians, I wasn?t in the position to drop $20k on the go. Instead I decided to finance my new used vehicle purchase.

Before I embarked on the car shopping journey, I compared all of my options on financing, leasing, and even paying in cash which fell quickly out of favor after I realized my rough purchase price. I also came to the realization pretty quickly that leasing a vehicle was not for me either, therefore leaving me with the option to finance the car.

Here?s a breakdown on why I chose to finance my vehicle purchase, and how the financing breaks down over the next 48 months.

NO LEASE FOR ME

I opted not to lease simply because I plan to keep the car anywhere from 3-6 years. Secondly, most of the depreciation on the majority of vehicles occurs in the first 2 years of life of the vehicle, therefore I saved a minimum of 30% or more on the initial price of the vehicle, plus the savings on the freight, PDI and other fees of buying a new vehicle.

A new 2013 BMW 3-Series list for roughly $39,000, depending on the options that come with the car. I purchased my 2009 BMW 3-Series for $20,100 including the interest financing charge for 48 months and the vehicle transfer fee. At the end I saved roughly 48% off the list price for a 3 year old vehicle with 75,000km.

For most people leasing makes no sense.?One reason that leasing is more costly today as the lease rates are virtually the same or higher at times than financing rates. Furthermore, a large upfront down payment is needed, which in essence is like giving cash away for free, and most importantly the large buyout that?s waiting for you once your lease is up if you choose to keep the car. You should be mindful of wear/tear fees at the end of the lease as well. For example, majority of the BMWs today are equipped with run flat tires, and at the end of the lease all vehicles must be returned with run flat tires that pass safety. More than likely after 3-4 years of driving a leased vehicle, I would have gotten dinged with having to replace all four tires. Yes, I know this is normal wear and tear, but on a financed car at least I get to keep the tires. On average run flat tires cost $350 each or $1,400 for the set depending on the make and tire size, which would further add to the cost of the lease.

SEARCHING FOR THE BEST INTEREST RATE

The finance rate was something else I devoted a lot of attention to, and got quotes from three different financial institutions. One should always compare financing options available, and choose what works best for them. During my quest for great financing, I compared the rates with the following three sources:

And after much comparison, I chose to finance my car purchase through the dealership (BMW Financial Services) for the following reasons:

Your main lender is not always the best choice ? Since most of my banking is with RBC, I kicked the tires with them first, and the best rate that RBC was able to offer me was 6.26%, and that?s after I negotiated them down from a 6.90%? posted rate. I saved 3.36% in interest rate, and potentially hundreds of dollars by doing a little research and choosing not to settle.

Open Term ? I financed the car over 48 months (4 years), and the loan is open, meaning I could pay it off anytime from now until it terminates in 2016.

Attractive Rate -? The rate of 2.9% is pretty attractive on financing a used car. And out the different financing options I considered, BMW Financial Services rose to the top with their attractive financing rate.

No Closing Fees ? There?s nothing to pay upfront or at the end of the financing term. Also, the down payment was flexible. I could have gone with as little as $500 for a down payment, but I wanted to put down as much as possible.

THE NUMBERS

The price of the car came to around $20k, including taxes and financing charge for 48 months.? I put down $2,000 and my bi-weekly payments for 48 months at 2.9% interest will be about $429. Which I am comfortable with. I could have lowered my bi-weekly payments and gone with a 60 or 72 month term, but I know I can pay off the car in 4 years or less

2009 BMW 3-Series

List Price ? $19,200

Purchase Price ? $17,495

Total Negotiated Discount ? $1,705

Financing Rate ? 2.9%

Monthly Payment ? $429

FINAL KEY POINTS

  1. You should work to pay off your car loan as quickly as you can. Then begin to save that money so that you can pay cash for your next car. This will give you a lot more financial freedom, and it will help you to break the car loan cycle. I set a goal to pay off my car loan in 36 months. Can I do it? Time will tell.
  2. Remember that buying a new car, you?ll absorb most of the depreciation. You lose money the second you drive it off the lot. In order to mitigate the depreciation, look at your options for buying a new used car.?
  3. If you?re financing through the dealership, don?t be afraid to ask for an even better price. The dealership is always getting a kickback for every financing deal that they put through.
  4. Shop around to find the best financing rate that works for you. Remember, your home financial institution will not always offer you the best rate. They?re in the business of making money, and your main priority should be to save as much money as possible.?
  5. Keep in mind that ideally the car you finance should be paid off within 3-4 year under any financing option. If you have to extend the term in order to afford the monthly payment, you?re buying too much car.?

Thank you for sharing your time with me today, and I hope this post has opened up your eyes on car financing for your next vehicle purchase.

Cheers, and all the best to you!

Now that I?ve talked about my experience, I?d like to know about yours; What has been your experience with leasing or financing a car?
