Rescued Michael Vick Dogs Reunited 5 Years Later | (DOG)SPIRED

They were battered and bruised but, ultimately, they were not broken.

Seven dogs rescued from NFL quarterback Michel Vick?s Virginia property when he pleaded guilty to federal charges relating to dog fighting, were reunited in California Oct. 27, tails wagging, tongues out, happy.

Five years ago they had scars, some physical, all emotional. They wore bandannas at their reunion celebration, surrounded by 125 emotional guests and their proud owners.

?They?re very forgiving and they all really enjoy other dogs, which is probably the other big surprise that came out of the case,? said Donna Reynolds, director of Oakland-based BAD RAP, an advocacy group for ?pit bull-type? dogs. ?In fact, dogs were a comfort to them.?

Reynolds? organization worked with prosecutors on the Vick case in 2007 to identify dogs that were taken from Vick?s property who could be rehabilitated. Of the 10 that Reynolds? organization secreted out of Virginia in the back of an RV because of the ongoing investigation, seven returned to their ranch nearly unrecognizable from the dogs that they were before.

Hector, a brownish pit bull, has scars up and down his chest and missing teeth from his days in Vick?s dog-fighting arena.

?He?s got a notch out of his tongue, a notch out of his ear. He definitely had a poor life before now,? his owner Roo Yori said.

Nearly five years ago, Yori and his wife drove more than 35 hours from Minnesota to San Francisco to pick up Hector. He came back to their home almost as if nothing had happened.?

?Hector, fortunately, was one of the dogs that wasn?t as affected as some of the other ones. Hector, he just kind of got out of there said, ?That stunk, let?s move forward,? and that was it. It was very obvious he had never lived in a house; he had never been a pet dog,? Yori said.

?He unpotted a potted plant because he wanted to play with it like a stick.?

Hector now fits in well with the family: Yori, wife Clara and their four other dogs.

At the ranch, the normally independent, 7-year-old Hector became uncharacteristically animated, wagging his tail wildly and wiggling in excitement upon being reunited with Donna Reynolds and Tim Racer, the founders of BAD RAP.

?Hector actually loved Tim and Donna ? you could totally tell,? Yori said. ?He?s kind of an independent dog, he?s kind of aloof. When he saw Tim and Donna, he stared wiggling. You could tell he remembered them.?

All the dogs now lead full lives.

?Dogs live in the moment; they don?t dwell on the past,? BAD RAP?s Reynolds said. ?Once they have enough positive experiences to draw on, they just run right into the present.?

Seven have Canine Good Citizen Certificates and three are therapy dogs in hospitals and children?s literacy programs.

At least one, Jonny Justice, a black and white Staffordshire bull terrier with something of an eye patch, has become a bit of a celebrity.

Jonny appeared on ?The Rachael Ray Show? in 2008 and next year will be the model for a stuffed dog made by manufacturer GUND as the winner of their ?Top Dog? contest.?

Of the 10 dogs rescued, three did not make it to the reunion: one because of distance and another because of a last-minute emergency. A third, Ernie, was just busy being a dog, no longer a ?Vick dog.?

?Ernie?s mom doesn?t want him to be a Vick dog anymore, she just wants to have a dog,? Reynolds said.

As the seven dogs and their owners posed for a glamour shot, giggles and laughter rang out when the dogs tried to squirm their way to freedom.

?The tails were just flying around,? said photographer Mark Rogers, who valiantly tried to wrangle the disorderly group for a final photo.

But there were also tears that came mainly from the 125 members of the public who attended the event just to lend some support.

?There were lots of hugs, kisses, lots of crying. When people meet these dogs, they cry,? Reynolds said. ?They understand that they are little pieces of positive history.?

Tommy Lee Rhea, Justin Alder: White Supremacists Wanted By Cops For Baseball Bat Attack, Stabbing

HESPERIA -- Sheriff's detectives are searching for two white supremacists in connection with an attack by five people on a couple in their home, authorities said Thursday.

Tuesday's attack was not racially motivated but was the result of a love triangle, authorities said.

Deputies said they were seeking Tommy Lee Rhea, 22, and Justin Alder, 24, both of Apple Valley.

The pair and three other Apple Valley men are suspected of breaking into a home in the 19000 block of Lindsay Street on Tuesday morning and beating a man with baseball bats and stabbing him repeatedly, said Sue Rose, spokeswoman for the sheriff's Hesperia station.

The intruders then beat a woman in the home when she tried to call 9-1-1.

One of the intruders, identified as Andrew Scott Schroeder, 22, of Apple Valley, had once dated the woman, deputies said. The man who was attacked was her new boyfriend.

The man, whose identity was not disclosed, was taken to a hospital. His condition was unknown. The woman was treated at the scene.

Those involved in the attack are members of the High Desert Peckerwoods white supremacist gang, authorities said.

The five alleged attackers were identified as Rhea, Alder, Schroeder, Douglas David Kim 24, and Nicholas Joseph Griffin 22, all of Apple Valley.

Schroeder was found at a High Desert hospital suffering from a stab wound from the attack, said sheriff's Detective Paul Bader. It was unclear how

Schroeder was injured.

Rhea, a parolee at large, is considered to be armed and dangerous. He was described as white, 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing about 220 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes.

No description of Alder was available.

Kim was arrested later Tuesday at a home in the 14100 block of Lakota Road in Apple Valley, records show.

Griffin was found and arrested Wednesday morning in the 22300 block of Outer Highway 18, also in Apple Valley.

Both were booked into the Victor Valley Jail in Victorville on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and burglary.

In 2010, Rhea was sentenced to three years after pleading guilty to assault with a deadly weapon for threatening a black family, including two children, as the family rode their bikes in Apple Valley, records show.

Anyone with information on the location of Rhea and Alder is asked to contact the sheriff's Hesperia station at 760-947-1500.

Since a lot of you are separated, divorced, or have been through troubled relationships before, I thought I would ask your opinion on a pre relationship survival kit.

What would you would put into an emergency kit [lock box] for just relationship emergencies, like if you're headed for another bad breakup or divorce?

Aside the "180 list" and a couple hundred bucks for emergencies I don't know what else. Maybe a copy of Divorce Remedy and a picture of the ex to remind me things could be worse.

Club Sports Spotlight ? Equestrian Club | SIUE Campus Recreation ...

We caught up with Amanda Hyett, president of the Equestrian Club about her experiences riding at SIUE! Did you know, this year at Preview Day, many prospective students expressed interest in joining this outstanding organization.

When was the Equestrian Club established at SIUE?
The Equestrian Club began in the Fall of 2008 by Leslie Harmon.

When did you start riding horses?
I have been riding ever since I can remember. We have always had horses, so it can be difficult to say exactly when I started.

Why did you join the club organization at SIUE?
I joined because I was actively showing while in high school, and discovered the opportunity to continue that while still in college.

What is your favorite thing about participating in the Equestrian Club at SIUE?
Meeting other people who share a similar passion. I wouldn?t have met, and be the person I am today if it weren?t for the people I have met through the Equestrian Club.

How often does the club get together to ride horses?
Mostly it is done independently through our riding coach, but we try for one group trail ride a semester.

What is it like to travel and compete against different schools?
A little nerve raking! Everyone is so good, and you never know what kind of ride you are going to have because you never know what kind of horse you will get.

What is your favorite memory participating in the Equestrian Club?
Car rides to shows! So early, but so worth it!

What is the club most looking forward to this year?
Getting everything moving in a fluid and forward motion!

What if someone is interested in joining Equestrian Club? How can they find more information?
They can email our club email siueequestrianclub@gmail.com and I will personally get back to them!

Amazon Prime plan now available at $7.99 per month

21 hrs.

For $79 per?year, an Amazon Prime membership lets you stream movies and TV shows from the Prime Instant Video library, gives you free two-day shipping on most items, and offers?other perks.?It's a fairly great value for most, especially those who shop on Amazon a lot.

But what if you're not ready to commit to an annual subscription, even after the free month trial?

You can sign up for a monthly plan.

As a reader of a typically Netflix-focused blog?appropriately?named Hacking Netflix noticed, Amazon appears to be testing out a monthly plan for Amazon Prime. Instead of $79 per?year, you can choose to pay $7.99 per?month. (Yes, this certainly does wind up costing you a bit more by the time 12 months pass.)

The $7.99 per?month option doesn't seem to be appearing to all customers, but TechCrunch's Sarah Perez points out that some folks had luck snagging it by trying out different browsers or checking the Amazon Prime page while not logged into their accounts.

We have reached out to Amazon for more details about the new Prime membership option, but in the meantime, we suspect that the online retailer is testing it out in order to better compete against Hulu and Netflix, video streaming services whose offerings are comparable to those in?the Prime Instant Video library. After all, even though they may wind up paying more over time, many folks seem to jump on a monthly subscription more quickly than an annual one.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.
