'Catfish' Subject Michael Fortunato Dies at 26

Michael Fortunato, a former subject on MTV's Catfish, has died as a result of a pulmonary embolism, MTV News reported. He was 26.

Fortunato, who died Saturday at Connecticut's Hartford Hospital, appeared in season two episode of the docu-series. It followed both him and Ashley Sawyer, 20, with whom he'd been in a seven-year online relationship, as they met for the first time.

A spokesperson for the Farmington, Conn., chief medical examiner's office told MTV News that he died as a result of a pulmonary embolism due to deep vein thrombosis. Obesity and cardiomyopathy also contributed to his death. An autopsy has not yet been released.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Michael Fortunato," an MTV spokesperson said in a statement. "Our condolences, thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time."

Fortunato and Sawyer were still dating at the time of his death.

She said he was en route to the hospital Saturday when he swerved and hit a fence. Paramedics arrives on the scene and took him to the hospital. Two hours later, his sister Gena got a call from her mom that he had died.

"He was a little kid at heart -- a gentle giant," Gena said. "He's somebody who put everybody before himself; everybody else came before him. The biggest heart that you'd ever meet."

Added Sawyer: "He would give anybody the last shirt he had -- anything. He would put his life on hold just to make sure other people moved forward. He always put people first."

Russian Internet Giant Yandex Acquires Top Movie Site KinoPoisk

MOSCOW – Russian internet giant Yandex has bought the country's most popular online movie site, KinoPoisk, for an undisclosed sum.

The move apes the business development model of Google and other popular global search engines on which it is modeled.

KinoPoisk -- known as the "IMDb of Russia," in a reference to the popular English-language online film domain -- attracts around 18 million visitors a month.

Like Google, Yandex is expanding and plans to merge its technical capabilities with KinoPoisk -- which means "cinema search" -- to create a video recommendation service, tips on where to see films locally, ticket and DVD purchasing options, and other services using its vast database and sophisticated algorithms.

The Russian search giant is understood to be in talks with all key Russian providers of premium video on-demand service to provide a one-stop shop for paid downloads.

The move comes at a time when Russian legislation is finally beginning to tackle Internet movie piracy and consumers are starting to demand better quality downloads than provided by the illegal "torrents" sites.

KinoPoisk, established in 2003 chiefly for a Russia's university student market, rapidly became a must for movie fans and is now one of the most popular sites on the Russian language internet, colloquially known as the "RuNet."

Like IMDb, KinoPoisk is based on aggregating film reviews, industry news and user-generated comments. The site has more than 100 million movie ratings and new ones are added at a rate of three million a month.

In a statement posted Tuesday on the site, founders, Vitaly Tatsiy, KinoPoisk's CEO, and Dmitry Sukhanov, its chief technical officer, said Yandex was "an industry leader that shares our values and way of thinking."

They promised fans of the site that the move marked "a new stage in the life" of the site and their "familiar and beloved KinoPoisk" would not disappear, but would "acquire new functions and features we are sure you will enjoy."

The terms of the deal have not been made public, but KinoPoisk is believed to be worth around $50 million, a sum revealed earlier this year when the site's chief backer AlloCine was looking to sell its 40 percent stake in the business.

Dmitry Stepanov, a spokesman for Yandex, said in a statement that the internet was increasingly where consumers turned for tips on which movies and TV shows to watch.

"In order to provide high-quality answers, we need to have a deep knowledge of the subject matter," Stepanov added.

"KinoPoisk has a huge collection of Russian-language information about films, serials, actors and directors, as well as user and expert reviews amassed over many years."

The site may retain its unique site and identity for a period, but industry observers in Moscow said Tuesday it was likely that its operating team, and possibly the site itself, would eventually be integrated into Yandex.

Netflix Shares Up 8 Percent After Reports of Talks With Cable Companies

Shares of Netflix surged 8 percent Monday after reports surfaced that cable operators were considering embedding the video-streamer's service into set-top boxes.

The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with discussions, said Netflix is talking to Comcast and Suddenlink Communications, and Bloomberg later reported talks are underway with Charter Communications and Cox Communications, as well.

Netflix stock Tuesday rose $23.51 a share to $324.36 on volume that was more than twice the average.

Presumably, if a deal were to get done in the U.S. it would be similar to an arrangement Neflix recently struck with Virgin Media in the U.K. and Com Hem in Sweden. With those two -- at least initially -- only their subscribers who use TiVo set-top boxes will be able to access a Netflix app.

Netflix's goal, though, is more likely that the app be available on cable boxes in general, therefore making the on-demand streamer more of a partner to multi-systems operators and less a competitor.

"We would love to reduce the friction to the end consumer and to be available via the existing device in the home," Netflix CFO David Wells said this year at an investor conference.

HTC offers larger phone, with fingerprint sensor

NEW YORK (AP) — At your neighborhood coffee shop, you can order your beverage in small, medium or large. Now, you can do that with phones, too.

HTC Corp. is introducing a larger version of its popular HTC One phone, becoming the latest phone maker to offer its flagship device in three sizes — and, of course, three prices.

The new HTC One Max has one feature unavailable on the smaller models: a fingerprint identification sensor similar to that on Apple's new iPhone 5S. It's an optional way to unlock a phone without using a four-digit passcode. Unlike Apple's version, however, the Max can be programmed to automatically open one of three favorite apps, depending on which finger is used.

HTC spokesman Tom Harlin said the company designed the Max with a fingerprint sensor to make the larger device easier to operate with one hand. Engineers also moved the power button to the side. On smaller models, it's on top of the phone, when held vertically.

The Max has a screen that measures 5.9 inches diagonally. That compares with the 4.7 inches on the standard version and the 4.3 inches on the HTC One Mini. HTC is designing its software to take advantage of the larger screen. With many Android phones, images and text simply get larger on bigger phones. With the Max, the layout of selected apps is reformatted to fit more content.

The Max also has more battery capacity than the smaller models, but otherwise shares their design and hardware features. Like the other Ones, the Max has a camera that can capture better low-light shots than the typical smartphone camera, but images are of lower resolution, at 4 megapixels. The Max weighs 7.7 ounces, which is more than the 5.9 ounces for Samsung's 5.7-inch Galaxy Note 3.

The price hasn't been announced, but it likely will be comparable to the $300 for the Note 3 and Motorola's Droid Maxx. That price typically requires a two-year service agreement and is $100 more than the regular HTC One, Samsung's Galaxy S4 and Motorola's Droid Ultra when they launched. (Mini versions of the One and the Droid go for $100 with a contract; the S4 Mini is currently available only overseas.)

Harlin said HTC is offering variety to meet consumers' differing needs. Some might prefer a small device that is cheap and can fit in the pocket of skinny jeans, while others might want more screen space.

As for the fingerprint sensor, HTC is including similar security safeguards found in the iPhone 5S. A mathematical representation of the fingerprint is stored on the phone in a secured location, inaccessible to other apps or remote servers. However, HTC does plan to eventually offer a way for other apps to use the ID system, without accessing the fingerprint data directly. Apple has no current plans for third-party access.

Despite assurances of security from Apple, a German hacking group claims to have bypassed the system using a household printer and some wood glue to create an artificial copy of a genuine fingerprint. Apple hasn't commented on that.

HTC said Verizon and Sprint Corp. will sell the HTC One Max in the U.S. in time for the holidays. AT&T Inc. has been offering the Mini since August. All four national carriers, including T-Mobile US Inc., have the standard version.

Mario Lopez Celebrated His 40th Birthday By Splitting His Pants Wide Open

Whoops!

Over the weekend, Extra! TV host Mario Lopez made his way to Las Vegas, NV to celebrate his 40th birthday and accidentally suffered a wardrobe malfunction in the process. Unfortunately for Mario, the pants that he was wearing were too tight and they split wide open at the crotch. Fortunately, tho, he was wearing his own Rated M underwear so he managed to turn the malfunction into an impromptu ad campaign for his underwear line. Very fortunately for us, Mario decided to share the photo on his official Twitter profile so … click below to see Mario and his exposed crotch in LV on his birthday night.

Uh oh… Ripped my suit getting into the car. It’s @RatedMOfficial kinda night… #PantsTooTight #Undies

LOL! Now this is a wardrobe malfunction I can get behind … er, or in front of … er, you know what I mean. Usually, celebs are so embarrassed when they suffer wardrobe malfunctions that it’s extremely rare to see a celeb proudly show off his whoopsie. I guess it’s a good thing that Lopez wasn’t going commando for his birthday night cuz if so then this photo would be much different. Haha. Better luck next time, I guess.
